Job Description Foundry Worker

  • Performs any combination of following tasks in foundry concerned with melting metal, pouring metal into molds, removing castings from molds, dressing castings, moving foundry materials, and cleaning equipment and work areas: Moves sand, castings, flasks, or other materials about foundry by hand, using wheelbarrow or cart, or by loading them onto conveyor.
  • Assembles flasks, using wrench, bolts, and tap screws.
  • Waters and mixes sand, shovels sand into flasks, and compacts sand in flasks, using ramming tool. Fits together, clamps, and unclamps cope and drag on production line.
  • Weighs out specified amounts of materials for furnace charge and loads charge into melting furnace.
  • Skims slag from surface of molten metal, using scoop. Carries or pushes ladles of molten metal on monorail and pours metal into molds weighing up to 80lbs. Installs and removes steel jackets and bands used to hold snap molds together during casting. Breaks sand mold from finished casting, using shakeout machine.
  • Removes gates, sprues, and other projections from castings with sledge, pneumatic hammer, power shear, or power hacksaw.
  • Sweeps and cleans work areas.
  • May be designated according to worker assisted or according to duty performed as Casting Carrier; Casting Sorter; Cupola-Tender Helper; Flask Carrier; Jacket Changer; Ladle-Liner Helper.
  • May be designated: Ladle Pusher; Mold Clamper; Mold-Closer Helper; Molder Helper; Molder Helper, Machine; Mold Stacker; Pattern Carrier; Pattern Cleaner; Sand-Screener Operator; Sand Shoveler; Sand Wheeler; Shake-Out Worker; Skimmer; Slag Worker; Sprue Knocker.
  • Read traveler document to verify what metal is to be used for each order
  • Operate VIP equipment to control melting temperature
  • Add new and recycled steel to pot to prepare for molten pour
  • Use VIP probe to verify temperature before pouring
  • Manual Pouring of steel
  • Complete paperwork associated with parts and VIP
  • Complete paperwork associated with parts and VIP
  • Clean equipment and work area after completing shift
  • Autoclave area, using Cut Off Saw removing excess investment casting material
  • Push and Pull on the Foundry Pour Team, Canning, and Oven
  • Loading and Unloading Cooling Tunnel
  • Using Automatic Processes to Cut off with Saw and Shake Out Machinery
  • Salt Spray Solution testing
  • Sand Blasting of raw casting material

Job Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check, physical and drug screen
  • Lift, carry, push or pull up to 50# frequently and up to 100# occasionally
  • Efficiently manage your time - excellent attendance is required
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to work extended periods of time in heat and cold as dictated by outside temperature
